5:2 Diet / Intermittent Fasting

A radical approach to weight loss, you eat normally for 5 days, then for 2 days cut your calories drastically. Intermittent fasting has of course been around for centuries as part of some religious practises, which may speak to its effectiveness.

How the Diet Works

The 5:2 diet was released in 2014 as a book followed by a documentary on the BBC in UK by Dr Michael Mosley, citing science based facts and packed with meal ideas. The premise being that you eat “normally” for 5 days, no restrictions (although its receomended to be mindful of food choices) and then for 2 days drastically restrict your calorific intake (600 for men, 500 for women). It’s a sold as a simple approach however would be unsuitable for anyone with health issues, pregnant or with a history of eating disorders.

Review Description

As a working single Mum, I found this diet easier to follow than expected. I split my 2 low cal days to Tuesday & Thursday which were very busy days in work and would be more likely to distract me. However I found that the slow weight loss wasn’t enough to keep me interested in following the plan long term. And I definitely didn’t pay enough mind to what I was eating on my “off” days. For long term maintenence I’d imagine this would work for the long term health benefits.
